Selling my bike because I’ll no longer be living in a small town, and I would probably get hit by a car if I tried to ride it in downtown Chicago.
Bye bye, HuffyBaby.

THE RITE WHITE

After the fashion show earlier this month, I decided to keep moving forward with designing menswear. As of right now, I have a basic trouser pattern, shirt and collar pattern, tank top pattern, and crocheted sleeveless sweater in my collection. I don’t think I’m ready to tackle a suit yet, but so far, the menswear designs I’ve constructed have been surprisingly easy. Womenswear has more diversity, so depending on the specific design, it can be more challenging.

These two images contain photos that provide me with a visual conception for my prospective collection. I began with searching for textures and shades of white or cream. After finding several architectural images, I compiled a family of roughly textured, harmonious photos. The combination of soft shades juxtaposed against the tangible irregularities reveal a somewhat androgynous appeal. I’ve really been intrigued by the concept of unisex clothing and androgyny, which explains my decisions in the garment design board. Raf Simons s/s09 menswear collection has been, probably, the collection I’ve been most inspired by. Also, Calvin Klein’s simplicity within every collection has consistently persuaded me to use a more soft, subdued color palette. As for the concept itself, I’ve been toying with the idea of the male tunic. In this generation, tolerance for men wearing “feminine” clothing is still low compared to tolerance for women wearing “masculine” clothing. Most cultures see the male tunic as a garment only fully accepted in traditional, Eastern cultures. Basically, any form of the male skirt or dress is only fully accepted with an attachment to traditional culture. I want to expand the diversity in apparel, not only in the sense of innovative styles, but the thread between menswear and womenswear. Making unisex products can often result in a degradation of quality. Designing for specific needs, and in this case, body types, most often assures the highest quality for that target market. But how can we create a universal design without loss of quality? Without a specific gender in mind? Fit, shape, contours; these are specifications designers typically live by, but I kind of want to disregard fitting, shaping, and contouring towards a sex and instead towards an idea- the idea that regardless of someone’s intent on sending messages through the use of fashion, we all seek beauty and the finer qualities, and by categorizing parts into an already blurry industry, we’re only limiting ourselves.
